Selectboard announces transfer-station recycling changes; glass consolidated, #1/#2 plastics recycled

At the July 22 meeting, Selectman Ben Kilanski described a shift in how Winchester will handle household recyclables at the Transfer Station: glass will be deposited in a new 16-by-16-foot jersey-barrier area at the current recycle-bin location, #1 and #2 plastics will be routed for recycling, and plastics labeled #3 through #7 will continue to be placed in compactors for disposal.
Kilanski said the approach is intended to be low-cost while the town searches for a commercial vendor to purchase glass in the future; he acknowledged some aesthetic concerns and said a permanent roofed structure may be added as budget allows. He asked for Selectboard volunteers to help with the transition, and Selectman Trevor Croteau volunteered to split a day helping staff the site. Town officials said current practice at other facilities shows runoff from the glass pile has not caused problems.
