Parent of Avon students urges community to become school advocates after learning district finances

A parent of four Avon Community School Corp students said they became involved with the district to learn more and encouraged other residents to do the same.

"I got involved because I have 4 kids in Avon Schools, and I wanted to learn more," the parent said, adding that a teacher nominated them to participate. The speaker described attending classes about the district's budget and said the sessions revealed how "complicated and confusing" school finances can be and how much the district accomplishes with the resources it has. "I thought I knew it, but it wasn't really until I got a deep dive from these classes that I understood just how complicated and confusing it can be, and just how much that Avon does with what they have," the parent said.

The parent urged others to take on an advocacy role and learn about the district firsthand. "I would say you should absolutely become an oil advocate. It's a great way to learn about your school," they said. The speaker framed the advocacy they described as a path for community members to better understand school budgeting and operations and to see how the district serves the local community.
