The Oakland Board of Education voted unanimously to enter an executive session at 6:16 PM during its June 9, 2026, work session. "Motion made by Ms. Kilday and seconded by Mr. Mazzilli to enter executive session at 6:16 PM," the minutes state; the motion carried on a roll-call vote with three members present.
Under the resolution recorded in the minutes, the board said it would discuss personnel matters, legal issues, Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) matters and contract negotiations—topics the board described as exempt from public discussion under the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Law, P.L. 1975, Chapter 231. The minutes further note that information discussed in closed session will be made public "as soon thereafter as possible and once the reasons for nondisclosure no longer exist." Board members present for the vote were Ms. Kilday, Mr. Mazzilli and Mr. Scerbo; Ms. Cooper and Ms. Shelkin were recorded as absent.
The minutes do not provide further detail on the substance of the closed-session discussion, consistent with the board's stated limitation on discussing personnel items in public minutes. The board returned from executive session at 6:37 PM, at which time two non-board attendees—Principal Gregg Desiderio and attorney Robert Lorfink—are recorded as having left the meeting.
