Members debate stipend proposal for walking-school-bus volunteers, citing equity concerns

Ariane described the recommendation, and Timothy Meyer warned that requiring or encouraging stipends could disadvantage schools whose parent-teacher organizations lack funds or do not exist.
"A lot of from a PTO perspective, a lot of PTOs are always stretched for dollars and may not have access to funds to even be able to pay some sort of a stipend," Meyer said, arguing that stipends might be inequitable unless the county provided funding or left the payment optional. Chair Wanika Fisher responded that the recommendation language is advisory and that stipends could be an option to engage parents in unincorporated areas with fewer volunteers.
The group kept the walking-school-bus recommendation but flagged stipend language for optional rather than mandatory implementation and agreed to refine the wording before public posting.
