Council declines to fund proposed 07/04/2026 celebration; staff to remove from budget

City Manager John Witzel and parks staff briefed council on a proposed July 4, 2026 celebration at Brockdale Park. Witzel said staff and the Parks and Open Space Board had vetted ideas but concluded that logistical and timing issues make it inappropriate to proceed and recommended removing the item from the budget. "I don't think that it's the right time logistically to try to continue with this... I would like to recommend that we, not move forward and remove this item from the budget," Witzel said.
Council members thanked staff for bringing the idea forward and for citizens who weighed in, but expressed concern about public safety, costs (one councilmember referenced a $50,000 figure for large fireworks shows) and current priorities. Several councilmembers encouraged staff to continue proposing events in the future but agreed not to commit budget funds for this particular proposal at this time.
