Councilors and SWAC members press county on methane capture, composting and recycling messaging

Vice chair Harrison and other council members used the presentation to probe waste-stream policy and methane recapture plans. Holt responded that Prince George's County "has the highest recycling rate in the state" and highlighted composting partnerships, 2,000 energy-efficiency grants and a strong composting facility; he said the county had issued requests for proposals to capture landfill methane and expected a proposal identifying a buyer within 30 to 45 days.
SWAC members who testified urged the council to expand the commission and press the Department of the Environment for stronger outreach and methane monitoring. Mr. Rush said methane is being flared instead of used and noted lost revenue; "it used to be, you know, was $2,000,000 revenue a year for the county and is now being flared off," he said. Dave Brosh, who identified himself as recently reappointed to SWAC and chair of its Greenhouse Gas Committee, urged support for expanding the commission to ensure the advisory body's capacity.
