District staff told trustees they do not plan to formally adopt a budget until September because state guidance is pending and preliminary numbers show a roughly $4,000,000 proposed deficit. Staff attributed much of the change to an estimated $1,300,000 swing in MFP funding related to student loss and a nearly $2,000,000 liability claim paid this year.
"Salaries are 84% of the total budget," the staff representative said, and recommended multi-year realignment strategies such as reviewing vacancies, combining or eliminating positions and evaluating pupil-teacher ratios. Board members proposed a workshop or retreat to examine the superintendent's recommendations and identify immediate, low-cost 'quick wins' to reduce the structural deficit ahead of formal budget adoption.
