San Mateo County Board appoints Marco Chávez as County Superintendent

The San Mateo County Board of Education on Feb. 18 unanimously appointed Marco Chávez to serve as County Superintendent of Schools for the remainder of the 2022–2026 term following a motion by Board Member Beverly Gerard and a second by Board Member Patricia Love. The Board earlier adopted authority under Education Code §1042(e)(2) enabling the Board to fill the County Superintendent’s Office by appointment.
Board President Hugo Torres administered the Oath of Office to Chávez immediately after the vote. Deputy County Attorney Lisa Cho had outlined the process under Education Code §1042(e)(2) before the appointment. The appointment vote was recorded as unanimous: Alvaro, Arias, Bonini, Gerard, Love, O’Neill, and Torres.
Board members praised Chávez’s leadership and readiness. Board Member Love said she felt “fortunate” that Deputy Superintendent Chávez was prepared to take on the role and expressed appreciation for his leadership; Board Member Arias thanked him for supporting a new trustee and said she looked forward to his ongoing guidance. Chávez thanked the Board, expressed gratitude for the appointment, and emphasized his commitment to advocating for students and families and supporting staff and community partners.
Next steps, as noted during the meeting, include Chávez assuming the County Superintendent duties immediately and staff carrying forward scheduled agenda items under his leadership.
