Coordinator Jesse Schaefer summarized recent and planned programs: an Advanced EMT class currently has seven students; BMCC-sponsored digital literacy workshops (including two using AARP Senior Planet curriculum) were held in Monument; Microsoft Word and additional Excel workshops are planned; and Jesse plans AI and Google Workspace series in May and June. A student celebration for Grant County BMCC students is scheduled on June 8 at 7th Street Park, and a birding field trip is scheduled for June 3 with transportation and lunch sponsored by the John Day Senior Center.
Board members discussed constraints on marketing the COD’s events because of limited budget and suggested seeking grants or contributions from the Chamber of Commerce, GEODC, OTEC, and Old West Credit Union for radio, Facebook, or local paper ads. Members also discussed EMS course enrollment: to their knowledge no Malheur or other agency employees have enrolled; board members considered whether a daytime EMS course would increase participation and suggested outreach to the Oregon Department of Forestry and local contract crews if that option is viable.
