FCPS details kindergarten readiness assessment steps and teacher training ahead of Oct. 10 deadline

Frederick County Public Schools staff explained the kindergarten readiness assessment (KRA) components and schedule to the Curriculum & Instruction committee. The KRA—part of the MCAP suite—combines two computer‑adaptive measures (STAR Early Literacy and STAR Early Math) and the SABERS observational social‑emotional screener. "The state has October set October 10, in legislation that that assessment always has to be finished by then," a presenter said.
Staff said KRA training is mandatory for teachers; the district will provide a training hour at the start of the year and follow‑up half‑day sessions in November and March. Presenters noted that KRA data are used to compare outcomes for students who attended full‑day pre‑K and to target supports for at‑risk communities so incoming kindergartners can access the curriculum.
