Town hears plan to seek up to $2 million for Redwood sewer and water upgrades

Town officials opened a public hearing on a proposed Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application to fund improvements to the Redwood sewer and water systems. Rob Tanfey, the town engineer, said the system is more than 30 years old and that the town could qualify for as much as $2,000,000 under the HUD CDBG small cities program.
"The system is over 30 years old and it needs to be freshened up," Tanfey said, describing likely work as replacement of pumps, reworking dosing chambers and repairs to sand beds. He told the board an application will be formalized and submitted to the CDBG program by July 31 and emphasized the request is intended to reduce the need for large, one‑time assessments on ratepayers.
Residents asked about the overall health of the system and whether piping required replacement. Tanfey said pipe infrastructure is generally in good condition but that mechanical components and dosing chambers are where failures happen. He and other staff discussed seeking a mix of state and federal funds — including USDA and the Water Quality Improvement Program — to cover local match and reduce taxpayer burden.
The hearing produced no immediate vote; town staff said application materials and any agency responses will be posted on the town website and discussed at future board meetings.
