Johnson Parkway project honored with APWA award; city staff recognized

The City of Poulsbo received recognition from the American Public Works Association for the Johnson Parkway project during the Sept. 18 council meeting.
Tina Nelson, a member of the APWA board, described the parkway as a long-term, $20 million effort that included environmental restoration, fish‑barrier removal, safer intersections and public artwork. "20 years, $20,000,000, and you're finally there," Nelson said, praising the city's project team and funding partnerships.
Mayor Rebecca Erickson and councilmembers highlighted the project’s safety and habitat improvements and acknowledged staff and contractors by name, including city engineer Josh Raines and public‑works director Diane Lanius. The mayor noted a bench on the parkway engraved with the names of three engineers who led the effort and thanked those who managed funding and coordination, including Connect Washington dollars and Kitsap Transit contributions.
City staff said the project involved coordination across multiple councils and agencies and was completed during the pandemic under difficult conditions. Council members used the moment to thank the public‑works team and to encourage residents to visit the new roadway and restored wetland areas.
