Commissioners accept CDBG closeout after county says Nugget Comfort met job targets

Granville County commissioners on Aug. 3 accepted the closeout report for a 2021 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) economic development loan to Nugget Comfort LLC, moving the project toward formal federal closeout.
Charlotte Duncan, the county's economic development director, told the board that Nugget Comfort received a $460,000 CDBG loan in 2021 for interior building renovations at its Falls Lake Commerce Center location in Butner. Consultant David Hartigan said the company "created 43 new jobs with 22 or 51% of them going to persons of low and moderate income" and currently employs about 83 people, and that the county loan was matched by more than $500,000 in private investment. Hartigan said the company has since invested between $9 million and $10 million in its Butler operations.
The board voted to accept the closeout report and authorized staff to request a monitoring visit from the North Carolina Department of Commerce and to complete the federal closeout forms if the monitoring finds no issues. Vice Chair (label 4) opened the public hearing, and no members of the public signed up to speak on the closeout. The motion to accept the closeout report carried by voice vote.
