Albion students seek city support for 5th Annual Community Day on Aug. 29

Galileo Dents (speaker 12), an AmeriCorps summer intern with the Center for Sustainability and Environment (CSC), told the council the CSC will hold its 5th annual Community Day on Aug. 29 and requested help identifying neighborhood projects and securing a pavilion permit. “We have harvested almost 1,000 pounds of fresh produce,” Dents said, and said produce has been distributed to residents to help mitigate food security.
Chloe Kropitz (speaker 11), a CSC intern and Albion College student, outlined how the event will run (project teams meet at the pavilion, work two hours, return for lunch) and said past events had more than 150 participants and 16 projects. Riley Adams (speaker 13) asked council members for project ideas across precincts and reminded them the organizers had completed permit worksheets and needed the city’s approval. Councilors discussed potential project sites (river access at Linden Avenue, Huntington Boulevard segment needing attention) and offered staff contacts to identify city projects.
Presenters asked council to publicize the event and to consider participating; staff said they would route permit and project lists to the students and noted city departments had helped identify projects in the past. The presenters left brochures and schedules with council.
