Council reviews solid-waste fund as non-ad valorem assessment rises to $550

AJ, who manages public-works budgets, summarized the solid-waste fund and recommended increasing the non-ad valorem assessment to $550 per household (up from $510) to account for contract cost increases. "That's to help pay for our portions of it... for island disposal," AJ said, describing that collection, hauling and disposal costs rose and that landfill/disposal price pass-throughs are included in the new assessment.
Council members probed whether offsets from the general fund would apply; AJ said there is an offset but that the fund must be largely self-sustaining. Staff estimated a transfer of about $257,000 may be required this year to balance the fund while staff finalizes assessment computations and mailings to affected residents.
