Organizers Gary Estep and Nick Retherford outlined plans for a 'Thunder in the Desert' tractor-pull event and requested Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) funding to cover event costs. Their budget showed $20,150 for a one-day event and $27,100 for a two-day event; they said proceeds would benefit the Hines Fire Department and that they have solicited community donations and regional interest.
Councilor Dean Brizendine moved to approve $20,150 in TLT funds to be split between the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 budgets; Councilor Hilda Allison seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Organizers emphasized outreach to nearby communities and that the event would be run as a family-friendly competition. As Estep put it, "If they could get $20,150, they should be able to raise the additional $7,000 to make it a two-day event," indicating the Council's award was intended as seed support contingent on local fundraising.
