City moves CDBG sidewalk project at South Avenue Elementary toward public hearing

Beacon staff presented a proposed Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application to replace deteriorating sidewalks along the east side of South Avenue in front of South Avenue Elementary School.
Finance/administration staff explained the project would target roughly 450 feet of sidewalk between West Center Street and the school's northern boundary, estimated at about $180,000. The city submitted a required letter of intent on the accelerated schedule and staff said they will submit the full application by the March 3 deadline. The staff member said Superintendent Matt Landau had been contacted and is supportive.
Staff reviewed recent CDBG projects and expenditures, noting nearly $1 million in CDBG funding used across recent years for sewer rehabilitation and multiple sidewalk phases. Council voiced support for moving the CDBG project forward to public hearing so the application can be completed in time for the county-administered deadline.
