Residents urge clearer leadership and safety steps after Tyrande Avenue assault

Public commenters at a Beacon City Council meeting urged faster, clearer action from city leaders after a violent attack on Jan. 14 on Tyrande Avenue.

Jessica Ericksman, who spoke during the meeting's first public-comment period, said the issue was not the police investigation but the city's public response. “This is about city leadership, communication, and most of all, compassion,” she said, and asked for increased patrols in wooded and poorly lit areas, improved ground-level lighting, coordination with the school district on bus-stop safety, and a public community safety forum.

Later in the meeting, the mayor read two paragraphs from the police chief's Jan. 30 statement, emphasizing the department has made the case its “absolute top priority” and that investigators are working with outside agencies. The mayor added the council had been asked to be cautious in public comments while investigators work.

Another resident, August Eric Simone, echoed Ericksman's call and read the remainder of her statement into the record, pressing for transparency and community forums so residents can “hear directly from city leadership.”

Council members acknowledged the community's fear and the limits of what officials can say while an investigation is active. Multiple council members said they would pass along safety recommendations to staff and await further updates from the police. The city asked residents to submit information in writing when appropriate and to report maintenance or lighting concerns through city channels.
