Beacon’s City Council adopted a local law to clarify referral timelines when the council sends land-use matters to the planning board.
Nick, a city staff attorney, told the council the change makes the referral process consistent with New York state law and responds to scheduling concerns raised by the planning board. Under the new rule the planning board will have a 60-day default period to return a referral, but the council may request a shorter 30-day review in urgent cases. “So the law gives the planning board 60 days to return a referral back to the city council, unless when you refer a matter, you request 30 days,” Nick said.
Council members discussed the practicalities of timing and directed staff to coordinate calendar checks with the planning board when referrals are sent. The council voted to adopt the local law.
