Council authorizes CDBG application to replace sidewalks near South Avenue School

The Beacon City Council on Monday authorized staff to apply for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money to replace sidewalk in front of South Avenue Elementary School.
City staff explained the annual hearing is required to apply for CDBG funds targeted to low- and moderate-income areas and said the proposal this year would replace roughly 450 linear feet of sidewalk in front of the school. “The hearing is required for us to apply for the 2026 CDBG funding…this year we've proposed to replace approximately 450 linear feet of sidewalk in front of South Avenue Elementary School,” said Chris, a city staff member. The packet includes a letter of support from Superintendent Matthew Landau, staff said.
Council members moved and seconded a motion to close the hearing and later voted to authorize the formal application. The council noted that final scope depends on right-of-way and cost estimates and that CDBG eligibility is limited by census-tract rules. Staff said the formal application deadline is March 3 and will be submitted after the hearing closed.
A resident, Teresa Craft, spoke in support of using CDBG money on the South Avenue project, calling it “money well spent.” The council approved the authorization in a recorded motion at the meeting’s resolutions section.
