Several residents urged the city to consider alternatives to creating a new downtown parking lot on recently purchased parcels, suggesting repurposing existing private lots or the post office parcel and cautioning against a parking deck.
"Is there a way for us to repurpose some of the parking lots that are already there?" asked John Tom Harry. Scott Shirley, who lives on Maple Drive, said he was concerned about the location and form of any new parking, adding he would "not really [be] crazy about the idea of a parking deck." Lewis Miller urged wider parking spaces for modern vehicles: "So my request is, please make the spots wider in these new parking places you're doing."
Speakers asked the city for a rough timeline for the topographical and building studies so residents can track progress. Staff said surveys and condition assessments are next steps and that public meetings will follow.
