The Barker Central School District board approved a grassland habitat restoration proposal from a consulting firm (RES) at its May 12 meeting. Under the agreement presented by Mr. Strong, RES pays the district $2,000 for initial access to perform surveys and pursue permitting. If additional time is needed after 12 months, RES has two optional 6‑month extensions at $1,000 each. If the project is approved by NYS and moves forward, RES would pay the district a one‑time fee of $2,000 per acre for the acreage used and commit to 30 years of land management.
Mr. Strong said the project "will not drastically change anything the District is currently doing" and pointed to educational opportunities for biology curriculum related to ecology and human impacts. A resident raised concern about removing a large blackberry patch that some neighbors harvest; the minutes note residents’ interest in preserving that feature. The Board approved the proposal by motion (Mr. Sweeney, Jr., second; Mrs. Carnes) and recorded a unanimous vote.
