District explores self-contained special-education continuum and transition supports
Summary
Director Mr. Learo reported 19 CSE reviews since Feb. 10 and described planning for a self-contained special-education continuum (elementary and middle grades) to better support students and allow fluid movement between settings.
Director of Instructional Services Mr. Learo told the Board there were 19 CSE meetings for reviews and reevaluations between Feb. 10 and Mar. 7 and described ongoing work to design a self-contained program continuum that could include elementary (K/1/2 & 3/4) configurations and ELA/Math self-contained supports for grades 5–8. He said the goal is to provide continuity for students while allowing transitions to consultant-teacher models as appropriate.
Mr. Learo said the team is reviewing differentiated curriculum options, anticipated early higher costs that may decrease over time, and the need for additional literacy supports at the middle-school level. He invited Board members to contact him with follow-up questions and said the District will continue financial reviews as program design progresses.
