Barker board tables proposed dress-code changes after hours of public comment

The Barker Central School District Board of Education voted April 10 to table proposed revisions to the district dress code following extensive public comment from teachers, parents and students.
Loriann Martell, a science teacher and BTU president, told the Board the union "strongly objects to the proposed changes" and warned the revisions could expose teachers to sexual-harassment complaints and create safety risks in hands-on classrooms such as the shop, kitchen and chemistry lab. Music teacher Drew Burke, reading a prepared statement, argued that a dress code "serves a purpose far beyond preventing as the new language states 'obscene and vulgar' appearances," saying schools should prepare students for professional expectations.
District staff presented survey results showing mixed views: 65.8% favored keeping the code as written on the full Code, and 76.5% favored keeping the existing language around the term 'lewd'; responses on hats and hoods were more divided. Board members said they wanted clearer, more objective language and agreed not to adopt the committee's suggested wording at this meeting. Superintendent Dr. Reimer outlined a revised timeline with a work session in June and a public hearing in July.
A motion by J. Sweeney, Jr., seconded by V. Voss to table the matter until May carried unanimously (Yes: 6, No: 0). The Board asked Administration to coordinate a further review of specific elements board members want included for the next meeting.
