Elkins Middle School leadership presented a detailed plan for integrating fifth grade into the middle school building ahead of the start of classes.
Principal Rochelle described classroom locations and said the school is holding one room in reserve in case enrollment requires a seventh classroom. Rochelle explained the plan to departmentalize instruction so teachers rotate for subjects rather than students changing buildings, noting, "So we're gonna departmentalize," to explain scheduling and staffing choices. The team described a specials rotation with one teacher alternating PE and music and said the 5th-grade students will have a designated lunch shift from 10:55 to 11:29 and a grab-and-go start at about 08:50. Because the building lacks enough lockers, Rochelle said 5th-grade belongings will be kept in classrooms and the staff purchased hooks and small storage solutions.
Staff also walked the board through intervention plans (I Ready) and new PLC meeting structures to monitor student data, and described makerspace resources and donated equipment the school will use. Board members asked about transportation, dismissal congestion and supports for students with mobility needs; the principal said the school will set up a secure pickup area and provide staff assistance for students needing extra help. The presentation concluded with thanks from board members for the preparation and an invitation for follow-up questions at the next special meeting.
