Engineer briefs board on highway garage renovation options and wide cost range

Nicholas VanDell of CO Engineering gave the board a technical briefing on the town highway garage, describing the existing structure as a 1960s hybrid facility with concrete floor and steel frame and a number of components near the end of their design life.
VanDell said the next steps should be a structural survey and inspection to prioritize critical repairs (roof replacement, exterior wall sections, garage doors, heating and electrical upgrades) and develop specifications to allow competitive bidding. He gave a renovation budget range of roughly $700,000 to $1.25 million depending on scope, and said a new building of comparable size would likely cost $2 million to $3.5 million.
VanDell also outlined funding options, including rural development or other grants, and warned that some grant sources add extra compliance steps that can raise costs and extend schedules; he recommended the town weigh those trade-offs before selecting a funding path.
