Town board schedules Oct. 15 public hearing on preliminary budget

The town board held a special meeting Oct. 6 to review a tentative budget and set a public hearing for Oct. 15, the board chair said.
“Once we open our public hearing, we can review this budget, we can amend it, we can change it and we can determine it to be our preliminary budget,” the chair said during the meeting. Sandy, introduced by the chair as the budget presenter, confirmed the tentative budget had been received and advertised and that the Oct. 15 hearing will allow public comment on water and sewer rates as well as the budget.
Board members and staff emphasized the schedule is flexible: the board is not required to adopt the budget on Oct. 15 and may extend adoption through later legal deadlines. The presenter explained that changes made after the tentative budget is issued need formal approval and resolution; the board agreed it could continue refining figures ahead of the hearing.
The meeting materials circulated to board members include the tentative figures; the board plans to review line items in detail at the Oct. 15 hearing before taking any formal adoption steps. The chair said the preliminary budget must also be the subject of an additional public hearing no later than the first Thursday following Election Day as required by procedure.
