The Town of Alexandria board voted June 18 to adopt an amendment to the town's Junk Storage Law, updating enforcement tools to allow the town or its code enforcement officer to enter properties to remove junk and to recover cleanup costs by placing a lien on the subject real property.
The change, described by the presiding official (speaker 2) during the public hearing, adds two sections: one authorizing entry for the purpose of cleanup and another allowing reimbursement of cleanup costs and administrative expenses by lien until the town has been reimbursed in full. "The 1st Amendment will empower the town board or the code enforcement officer to authorize entry onto property of an owner or occupant ..." the board noted when announcing the proposed change. A roll-call vote followed a motion by Sean and a second by Tim; the clerk recorded affirmative votes and the motion passed.
Board members and staff said the amendment is intended to address repeated cases of failed compliance by property owners that have resulted in public-health and infrastructure concerns. The record shows the hearing was opened and closed before the board moved to adopt the measure as Local Law No. 1 of 2025 (an amendment to Local Law No. 1 of 2023).
