Council agrees to host Granville County MLK breakfast at Soldiers Memorial Sports Arena in 2027

The council voted Aug. 6 to partner with the Granville County Human Relations Commission to host a county Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast at Soldiers Memorial Sports Arena in January 2027.
Mike McFadden, chair of the Granville County Human Relations Commission, told the council the county commission had voted unanimously to ask Butner to partner and that moving the event to the sports arena would allow greater attendance and participation: "I'm here simply to ask the Butler Town Council, the town of Butler to create a partner with human relations commission to hold the annual Martin Luther King Junior breakfast... at the sports arena in January 2027," he said. Staff said there were no expected operational or staffing conflicts and recommended approval; the council voted unanimously to approve the request.
Staff and councilmembers said the move would make the event more accessible and hoped it would be well attended by area residents and students.
