Council approves Philip S. Miller grant awards totaling $45,000 to five local nonprofits

Clark Hemmway, chair of the Public Safety Commission, presented the commission’s recommendation for the Philip S. Miller resource grant program. He said the commission received $97,000 in requests and recommended awarding five grants totaling the $45,000 annual budget across organizations focused on energy, food and shelter assistance.
Hemmmway summarized the awards: American Legion Post 1187 — $5,000; New Hope Presbyterian deacons — $7,500; Faith Lutheran Church food pantry — $5,000; Help and Hope Center — $20,000; and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Castle Rock — $7,500. "We had 8 individual applicants, and we're limited to giving that $45,000 or sharing that $45,000 among only 5 applicants," Hemmway said, explaining the selection challenge. The council moved to approve the recommendations and voted 6-0.
Council liaison for the Public Safety Commission said food was a major focus this year and that staff prioritized organizations that directly benefit Castle Rock residents. The council congratulated Dan Marlowe, executive director of Help and Hope, on his years of service and retirement plans.
