The Huntington City Council awarded this year’s downtown and memorial beautification contract to local firm United Lawn & Landscaping for $5,945, after reviewing competing bids and debating water availability and planting quantity.
Planning staff presented two bids: "United Lawn and Landscaping is, Damien Gordon here in Huntington. And his bid came in at, $5,945," and Anderson/Andersen Nursery of Richfield submitted a lower bid of $5,488. Staff recommended keeping a local contractor; the council also discussed cutting the number of pots from 185 to 165 and removing some plantings from the cemetery while increasing plantings at the Miners' Memorial to reduce watering needs.
Several council members expressed concern about the water supply and asked whether plants could be watered if drought conditions persist. Staff noted planting usually starts next month and said contractors would begin seeds as soon as given the go-ahead. After discussion the council approved the award to United Lawn & Landscaping by voice vote. The contract includes the agreed reduction in the number of pots and the changed planting locations.
