Board approves updated student code of conduct, adds —3boot camp—4 option and AI-use rules

Administration presented several targeted edits to the student code of conduct and said the board would act on the document as part of the consent agenda. Carrie Smith, director of student services, described the substantive changes: additions of district service as a Level 2 disciplinary option, a boot-camp curriculum for some DAEP students, updates to DAEP principal and point assignments, and a new paragraph on artificial intelligence clarifying that the use of AI to harm, disrupt, or compromise district systems is prohibited.

Explaining the boot-camp option, Smith said the district hired six behavior-management interventionists to staff the program (some shared across feeder patterns and one assigned at each traditional high school). "All of those gentlemen have been trained in the last week. They are all fitness certified... We have 50 workouts that they will do with the students along with their CPR 1st aid AED certified... These are gonna be boot campers for our students that are at DAEP, and this will be an opportunity for them to provide themselves with an opportunity for some fewer days based on their activity in boot camp," Smith said.

Trustees asked clarifying questions about formatting and minor typos (a stray fragment in one bullet point) and requested public posting locations; staff said the handbook will be posted on the district website by the Monday after board approval and attached to the student handbook if the board approved the item at this meeting. The board voted on the item after a motion to amend part of the annual calendar language; meeting minutes record the motion as approved.
