Mayor Greg Newton read a proclamation declaring October 2025 as National Fire Prevention Month and urged Norco residents to prepare family emergency plans and prioritize fire-safety practices.
Fire Chief Otterman told the council that prevention reduces the need for suppression and saves lives. He listed simple precautions — clearing brush near homes to limit wildland fire risk, testing smoke detectors monthly and keeping a kitchen fire extinguisher — and urged residents to avoid using power tools on hot, dry days. "Prevention is key to the success, of keeping our community safe," he said.
The proclamation cited the 2025 theme "Charge Into Fire Safety," which highlights safe purchase, charging, recycling and disposal of lithium-ion batteries used in phones, laptops and e-bikes. The chief also recommended family evacuation drills a couple times a year and safe cooking practices to reduce home fires.
The council acknowledged the presentation and thanked the fire department for its work and public outreach.
