Resident alleges elevated ICE activity at county jail; requests board investigation

A county resident urged the Board of Supervisors to take immediate action after reporting what she called an "unprecedented" level of ICE activity at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
Susan Mackey said ICE agents apprehended six people over one week — including five who had been issued citations and one ordered released by a judge — as they were exiting the jail. "To be clear about what happened, 5 of those individuals had been processed, given citations, and assigned arraignment dates weeks into the future. They were legally cleared to return to their families and prepare for court. Instead, ICE intercepted them right as they stepped out the jail door into the public lobby," Mackey said, urging the board to investigate the handoffs and timing.
Mackey said the activity undermines public trust and discourages cooperation with law enforcement. The board acknowledged the concern during general comment; supervisors did not announce any immediate enforcement action but thanked Mackey for bringing the allegation to the board’s attention and suggested staff follow up.
