Board weighs dropping CTE requirement from Hope site to make developer comparisons equitable

At the Aug. 6 meeting staff told trustees that incorporating career technical education (CTE) on the Hope School parcel had driven variation in proposals and could skew financial comparisons. Presenter Terry said some developers declined to include a robust CTE component because it added cost, and noted that “CTE can receive state funding...but it has to be at a high school,” suggesting the district could pursue CTE elsewhere or secure state-funded high-school-based CTE rather than require developers to carry that cost.
Board members asked clarifying questions about whether placing CTE elsewhere or shifting the career pathway would broaden developer interest; Dr. Nunez confirmed there is currently no school on the site and staff will check the school code and other constraints before returning with a recommendation. The board directed staff to seek developer clarifications and consider reissuing guidance so finalists can be compared more directly.
