Residents urge keeping Ashland pond; board hears dredging and pump costs

Several residents and board members urged preserving the park’s pond as a community amenity instead of replacing it with a non-water feature. "People love that pond," a resident said during public comment, and multiple speakers described the pond as central to the park’s character and daily use.

Public works staff explained that the pond has heavy organic buildup and that the fountain cannot overcome current conditions; dredging and bypassing the pond to perform work would be required. "It needs to be done now, to be honest," a staff member said about dredging; the meeting included several back-of-envelope figures (a $30,000 dredging figure was raised informally) and discussion of recurring pump costs in the thousands of dollars per replacement cycle. The board asked staff to include dredging and annual maintenance cost estimates in the follow-up materials so the board can evaluate whether preserving the pond is financially sustainable.
