The Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District Board of Education approved adoption of new biology and chemistry textbooks at its June 9 meeting and authorized staff to proceed with procurement up to an estimated $100,000.
Staff presenter Tori (S7) told trustees the recommended texts—Miller‑Levine (biology, 2020 edition) and a Pearson chemistry text—were vetted by departments, aligned to standards and include digital platforms, accessibility features, Spanish language supports and supplemental materials designed to be reusable rather than single‑use consumables. "We are adopting tonight," Tori said during the presentation of the adoption request.
Trustees asked how eText access and class sets would work; staff explained the district will provide class sets and, in some cases, take‑home versions while ensuring the district’s Canvas integration and screen‑reader compatibility. Trustee Brian Robinson moved to approve the purchase; a second was recorded and the board approved the adoption by roll call (Mister Johnson — Aye; Miss Grace Velasquez — Aye; Mister Levamini — Aye; Mister Robinson — Aye). The chair declared the science textbook adoption approved.
