Board highlights student leadership, HOLA Club and $217,000 in community scholarships

The Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District board spent the opening portion of its May 19 meeting hearing from students and club advisers, highlighting student leadership and local scholarship support.
Student board member (speaker 5) reported on senior activities and upcoming ASB events, saying, "It was super fun," when describing the senior recess. HOLA Club co-advisers Agustin Biscayno (speaker 6), Joanna Saragos (speaker 7) and Susana Rodriguez (speaker 8) described the club—s 30-year history, roughly 75 members and recent college field trips to Pepperdine and UCSB. Student representative Lupita Varrado (speaker 9) told the board the club emphasizes college access and cultural events.
Superintendent-level remarks (speaker 4) and ASB director Rob Cantrell (speaker 12) introduced the executive ASB council and three Students of the Month. Staff noted the district and community partners "gave away over $217,000 in scholarships that night," a figure the board praised as evidence of local support. The board congratulated honorees and recognized PTO volunteers, coaches and classified staff for their roles in student success.
Board members said the student presentations and scholarship efforts show an active community-school partnership, and trustees encouraged continued family and community volunteer participation.
