Board appoints Mark Copeland to fill vacant trustee seat after candidate interviews

The motion to appoint Copeland was made from the dais and seconded; the appointment carried on a roll-call vote with four trustees voting yes and two voting no. Copeland introduced himself to the board earlier in the meeting as a community coach and teacher and described his work in the district during a candidate Q&A round. "I go to every Garden Hill event," Copeland said during his introduction, adding that he is visible at school events and intends to be an accessible board member.
Trustees questioned each candidate about fiscal priorities, student supports and how they would build trust with families and staff. Estela Chavez Prado, the other finalist, emphasized fiscal conservatism and said the district should aim to preserve reserves. Prado said she would "keep reserves around 17% to 20%" when possible.
The board recessed for closed session following the appointment. The district will publish the formal appointment paperwork and term details in the minutes and staff will confirm the effective date and any required onboarding steps.
