Shelby County commissioners approved an amendment to the FY2025 Health Department grant operating budget to appropriate up to $411,000 for improved carbon‑monoxide monitoring across targeted ZIP codes. Deputy Director Casey Smith Alexander gave a technical presentation describing monitoring-radius scenarios (1.5, 3.5 and 5.5 miles) and which ZIP codes would be represented under different wind‑speed regimes.
Alexander explained that data from a proposed monitoring site would most closely represent ZIP codes 38109 and 38106 under light winds, and would provide broader coverage across additional ZIP codes at higher wind speeds. Commissioners moved to add the presentation as Exhibit C to the item and then approved the appropriation; the clerk recorded eight aye votes. Commissioners noted this drawing-down of EPA grant funds would be an important step in expanding air-quality monitoring infrastructure.
