Recreation director says overseas teams are boosting local businesses; more nations expected
Summary
City recreation staff told commissioners that hosting international teams (including the Netherlands) has brought immediate local spending (example: about $15,000 from a 30‑person two‑night visit) and that Team USA, France and Australia are among teams secured for upcoming years.

Recreation staff reported that Mission Viejo has begun hosting international athletic teams as part of Olympic and Paralympic preparations and that those visits are producing economic activity for local hotels and restaurants. Mark, the recreation presenter, said of a recent Dutch visit: "for 30 people being here for 2 nights, they spent a little over $15,000, supporting our local businesses." He said the city is securing facilities (including the Marguerite Aquatics Complex) and expects Team USA (dive), France and Australia, with two more countries near agreements.
Mark cautioned that final rosters can be announced close to the Games, so plans must remain flexible; commissioners asked staff to publish impact figures on the city website and Mark agreed to present figures at next week's City Council meeting. Commissioners generally described the initiative as a win for Mission Viejo and local businesses.
