Xcel Energy briefs Chaffee County on wildfire‑mitigation steps; commissioners press for more hardening and local communication

Xcel described four pillars of its plan: situational awareness (weather stations, AI cameras and meteorological forecasting), system strengthening and hardening (targeted undergrounding, covered conductors and pole replacements), operational mitigations including enhanced power‑line safety settings and limited public‑safety power shutoffs (PSPS/EPSS) driven by objective weather‑based criteria, and enhanced customer support (backup batteries for vulnerable customers, advance notifications and local engagement). "When those 3 criteria are met, we, use our software... that's how we make the decision of whether to execute a PSPS or not," Xcel's president in Colorado said.
Commissioners and community members praised some successes (camera detections) and pressed Xcel for faster prioritization of hardening projects and better, more local communications and mitigation for businesses and critical facilities such as Monarch Mountain and the hospital. Xcel said Monarch is being reprioritized for additional vegetation management and other improvements and described planned technology and resilience measures for future wildfire plans.
