Council approves temporary Front Street closure for flags ceremony

Council approved a motion to close Front Street between Brown and Congress on Aug. 9 to allow a flags-of-freedom display and a short solemn ceremony.

Event organizer Jim Albright told the council he planned a 304-flag display and asked for help to set the flags and to close the street for roughly two hours so the ceremony would not be disrupted. He told council members, "I'm asking counsel if there's a possibility that we can close Front Street from Brown to Congress Street for 2 hours to have this solemn ceremony that's basically a funeral for these 304 soldiers." After discussion about safety and side-street access, a motion to add the closure under business items was seconded and the council approved the street closure on a roll-call vote with language expanded to include side-street access during the closure window.

Council members emphasized public-safety considerations and coordinated with the police chief and public-works staff to ensure intersections and detours would be managed during the event. The council’s action is limited to the temporary closure for the specified date and time; organizers were told to coordinate logistics and volunteer support with village staff.
