Commissioner criticizes budget for raises, nonprofit payments and perceived mayoral overspending

At least one commissioner forcefully criticized the overall budget package, saying it could have been completed months earlier and objecting to several items including a $75,000 EMA truck, industrial-board spending and new hires in the mayor's office. "This budget stinks to high heaven," the commissioner said.
The commissioner also noted what she called inconsistent starting salaries for new mayoral hires and argued that the mayor's office costs and recent hires were excessive compared with other departments. Budget staff responded that some starting-pay decisions were previously approved by the commission and that personnel actions and handbook exceptions would be reviewed in regular commission meetings.
