During the meeting a college-affiliated speaker clarified county policy on student travel and asked commissioners for a minimum of $4,000 to support programming in the college of liberal arts and social sciences.
"Under no circumstances can we sponsor student travel as a policy," said Dr. Finley during his remarks, adding that the college's support is programmatic — inviting speakers, hosting student presentations, and providing meals. He asked the commission for a minimum of $4,000 to sustain events and speaker programming.
Following the request, several commissioners made designated commitments and the commission later approved a designated revenue appropriation that included $1,000 from one commissioner, $1,000 from another, and $2,000 from a third, which commissioners said achieved the requested amount.
