Council budget adds vehicles to police fleet; staff say leasing smooths replacement
Summary
Finance staff said the FY2027 budget includes funds to add six vehicles (in addition to six budgeted earlier), bringing the fleet replacement to 12 vehicles; the police chief had requested 15. Council and staff said leased vehicles help avoid large one-time replacement costs.

Council members questioned staff about the police-fleet allocation before adopting the budget. A council member asked how many vehicles were being purchased; Peter Andrew said the prior budget cycle budgeted six vehicles and the current budget adds six more, bringing the total to 12. He added the police chief had requested 15 replacements and that the vehicles are leased to smooth replacement cycles.
"We hit budgeted, 6 total vehicles last budget cycle...the current budget includes an additional 6 vehicles...And these are leased vehicles," Andrew said, describing the city's approach to spread replacement costs and reduce high mechanic and repair expenditures related to aging vehicles.
