During the public-comment portion of the hearing, several Fitchburg residents spoke in support of Anthony Zarrella’s candidacy and his compliance with nomination requirements. Beth Walsh and Sally Cragin both expressed support and said Mr. Zarrella had confirmed procedures with election officials.
Derek Cruz said he had moved during the previous municipal election and that Mr. Zarrella had followed the rules. Andrew Van Hazinga highlighted a procedural point observed during testimony: "Councilor at Large candidates can obtain signatures from voters anywhere in the city," a fact the registrars considered in deliberations.
Registering multiple residents in favor of the candidate was one factor the registrars weighed before denying the objection; the minutes record no contrary resident testimony beyond the objection filed by Ms. Wehtje.
