Board hears update on avian influenza, measles and COVID surveillance

At the Oct. 8 meeting Health Officer Amy Kleiber briefed the board on several communicable-disease items. She reported an avian influenza outbreak in Jefferson County that required culling of about 3 million birds and eggs; health staff said there were no confirmed human cases linked to that outbreak.
Kleiber also summarized national measles data, citing 1,544 cases reported nationally, roughly 12% of which resulted in hospitalization and three deaths. On local surveillance, she said Viroqua wastewater readings for SARS-CoV-2 were low and there were no measles reports in the county at this time. Kleiber reminded the public of routine respiratory-season precautions such as handwashing.
The board discussed these updates but did not adopt emergency measures; staff will continue to monitor regional disease activity and local surveillance.
