San Luis police present automatic license-plate readers and surveillance program to council

Chief Nikhil Reynoso told the City Council the department uses integrated ALPR and video systems to support criminal investigations and public-safety responses.
"The primary purpose of the LPR systems it's a program that is automatically cap that captures, record, and checks vehicle license plates data against law enforcement databases to detect stolen and wanted vehicles, locate wanted suspects, and make criminal investigations," Reynoso said during the presentation. He described optical character-recognition workflows, hot-list alerts and dispatch verification practices that notify officers in the field.
Reynoso said the department operates ALPR cameras at seven locations (with some sites using more than one reader) and maintains about 17 city video-surveillance camera sites. He also described an in-vehicle recording system in patrol cars intended to improve officer safety and streamline evidence management.
The chief closed by offering ongoing transparency: the department can publish quarterly or annual reports that list queries, hits, data-access events and audit results. He invited the council to ask questions and said staff would provide follow-up information where needed.
Although Reynoso cited multiple investigative successes credited to the system—locating missing and endangered people, identifying stolen vehicles and developing leads in violent-crime cases—he and council members also discussed system limits, training and procedures for access and audits.
