Montour Trail Council says tunnel repairs will cost about $3.25 million; fundraising and grant applications underway

Ned Williams of the Montour Trail Council updated the board Aug. 3 on the National Tunnel closure and repair plans. He said early estimates put repair costs at about $3,250,000 and that the council has started fundraising and submitted initial grant applications.
"It's gonna be about a $3,250,000 effort to fix it," Williams said, and the council expects to pursue available grants including the Local Share Account this fall as part of a funding strategy. He said if grant requests and foundation support come through, construction could begin in the spring with hopes to reopen the tunnel before the end of next year.
Williams noted the tunnel lies at mile 25 of the 50‑mile Montour Trail and that the closure forces some trail users onto public roads; he thanked local police for assisting with safety and patrols in the interim.
